You know you are old when…

What is it with kids today and their crazy hairstyles, baggy pants and weird video games?

Finding myself with half an hour to kill before watching a movie (Lost in Translation – it is excellent) on George St today I thought, “I know, I’ll have a few games of pinball”. I could only find one pinball machine in the two amusement arcades near the cinemas, and it was bit worn out – the balls kept on jamming. I did get excellent value for money though – 6 games for $2 and two bonus games. I had to leave two credits on the machine because it was time to go to the movie.

There were plenty of driving games of course, but the latest thing seems to be “virtual rock star” games – The machine is fitted out with a drum kit or a electric guitar and you have to play along with the cues on the screen. These are really just variations on the “Dance Dance Revolution” games which seem to be based on memorising sequences (by playing many, many times at $2 a go).

It was quite funny to see the electric guitar version of this game featured in Lost in Translation as an example of strange Japanese culture.
