The killer app for broadband

There has been a lot of discussion in the I.T. media and from the government about what is the killer app that will drive broadband take up. I submit that it is patching Microsoft operating systems.

A brand new Windows XP installation requires over 36 megabytes of patches to be applied. This takes a number of hours over broadband and requires several reboots. Imagine if you had to download all that data over dial up – and redial your Internet connection each time. No wonder there are so many unpatched Windows computers out there.
